WHAT:
The NYC Siyum HaShas ('completion of the Talmud') is a celebration of the completion of the 12th Daf Yomi cycle.
Daf Yomi, or 'daily folio' is a program of Talmud study inaugurated in 1923 at the World Congress of Agudath Israel in Vienna by R. Yehudah Meir Shapiro, zt"l. Using this methodology, the entire Talmud - some 2500 folios - is competed about every 7.5 years.
The first two hours will be devoted to parallel classes, shiurim, and lectures on topics relating to the daf yomi, to learning Gemara, to teaching Gemara, to sugyot or philosophical concepts in Gemara, really any topic related to Gemara or daf yomi, from a wide range of rabbis, scholars, and teachers. Both men and women will present, and bring perspectives from the diverse disciplines (traditional, lomdus, history, academic Talmud, pedagogy, etc.). The final hour will have all participants coming together for a communal Siyum haShas, followed by a light buffet Seudat Mitzvah (celebratory dinner).
WHO:
The NYC Siyum HaShas is an ad-hoc event that is not being sponsored by a particular organization – rather,it is an event which focuses on studying Talmud - learning Gemara - and on its primacy in our lives as Orthodox Jews. It is particularly meaningful for those who are kovea itim (set aside study time) daily, whether through Daf Yomi or other forms of learning. It includes the widest possible range of co-sponsoring institutions and speakers from within the Orthodox community.
We welcome the participation of additional such institutions, which will broaden that range even further. Co-sponsorship does not require any financial commitment (although contributions to offset expenses would be welcome). Your co-sponsorship would be a statement of support for this event, and we would ask that you email the event information and invitations to your membership, and generally encourage your members to join us in attending.
All those with an interest in Talmud study are welcome, men, women and children, from beginners to lifelong devotees. Please register in advance on-line (registration is now open). While there is a nominal charge to help us cover expenses, no one will be turned away for lack of funds. Please email us for reduced-rate registration.
Anyone who studies Daf Yomi and is marking his or her own completion of this cycle is encouraged to join our Honor Roll. Please see our DafYomi Honor roll page for details.
